Debt Ceiling "Deal"? – 'Bipartisan' DISASTER!

Once Washington gets committed to going in the wrong direction, it can be almost as difficult to

change as a fully-loaded freight train. Nonetheless, it's worth a last-minute try, because if the

train keeps going, it will surely jump the tracks and it's better to have plans ready when it does.

The Disaster "Deal", which advocates want to see voted in and signed into law in early August,

deserves a resounding NO from both Democrats and Republicans. Instead, Obama should step

up and invoke the 14th Amendment to raise the debt ceiling without Congressional approval.

To reassure 'the markets', he can explain that interest payments on Treasury notes and such

will be paid – usually on time -- and with only brief pre-announced delays, when necessary.

Although Obama understands the long-term importance of deficit reduction, he can and should

act on that without allowing himself to be blackmailed. However, because he has been reluctant

to raise the debt ceiling without Congressional approval, he has allowed himself to blackmailed

into foregoing any near-term tax increases, even on people who can readily afford to pay them!

As of mid-summer 2011, America's hoped-for economic recovery is slowing, rather than growing

and inadequate tax revenues will make matters worse, rather than improve them. Without new

revenues, extensions of unemployment benefits will be impossible, millions more homes will be

foreclosed and millions of renters will be evicted, with increased damage to local economies.

America needs well-conceived tax policies. And attack-ad campaigns won't create them. Tax

cuts rarely 'boost the economy', but mostly help people feel better and get politicians elected.

With middle-class tax cuts, the money almost always gets spent, sustaining the economy,

whereas tax cuts for the well-off may not be spent, and actually increase Federal deficits!

Congress needs to VOTE "NO" on the debt ceiling "deal" and do the job right, instead!
